Vietnamese native, Nguyen Van Thuan, was born into a devout catholic family with a long history of martyrdom. On April 24th,1975,he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Saigon 6 days before the city fell to the Vietcong. Van Thuan was targeted because of his familial ties to the former south Vietnamese president, Ngo Dinh Diem, and for his catholic faith. He was labeled a Vatican spy.
